We are delighted to speak with Joe Kenly also known as “Coach Joe” a certified life coach, husband, and father about his new book geared toward emerging adults and the art of decision making.
How are you doing?
I’m thankful for the privilege to talk with you and your audience and share information regarding the release my debut book Anatomy of Your Decision-Making (working title) to be released in the Spring of 2021.
What inspired you to write your book, Anatomy of Decision Making?
I’ve always been interested in understanding why I think and do things the way I do. I know that I always want to improve myself to be a better person by making quality choices that will benefit me and whoever or whatever I’m attached to or share a common interest.
I don’t believe anyone wants to live a life or do things without a specific purpose, so examining our personal decision-making process is a way to understand why we do and think the way we do. By doing this we can identify our biases, influences, and our motivations. It’s an opportunity for us to make better choices.
Who is the book for?
Ultimately, my book is for any person who wants to learn to make quality personal and business decisions; however, I specifically targeted this book towards the emerging adult (ages 18-25) demographic, where adolescents become more independent and search to explore their unique identities. Exploring begins with decisions and decisions will result in an outcome (desired or undesired). The book is designed to assist the emerging adult by teaching them how to make better decisions by identifying the impact influences contribute to choices and the corresponding actions that follow.
What is the biggest take away from the book?
The biggest takeaway from the book is for readers to understand the impact that influences have on decision-making. Influences whether learned or inherited can be strengths towards good decision-making, but can be hindrances as well, leading to poor choices and indecisiveness. Awareness of why we do and think the way we do provides insight into the building blocks of our character so we can change what needs to be changed to create the best version of ourselves.
What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
If there is something in you that can impact someone else by motivation, inspiration, or pure enjoyment, write it down and talk to author coaches or author mentors that can show you the process of writing through getting your work published. Literature remains and will be a legacy left for future generations.
What do you do when you are not writing?
I enjoy spending time with my family, listening to 80s and 90s R&B music, dancing, being inspired spiritually by men and women of God, listening and reading material by motivational speakers that challenge me to be better, and talking with old friends.
Let’s talk about life as a dad!
How would you describe your life as a father in just six words?
Rewarding, reminiscent, crazy, semi-structured, fun, and intentional
How old are your kids?
I have all boys: 19, 14, and 6 years old.
What was the best advice on fatherhood you ever received?
I have an opportunity to impart information that will impact my kids’ life, so while I have time with them, teach and demonstrate with love and discipline everything necessary to help them achieve their personal definition of success while remaining humble and spiritually grounded.
What are some things you and your family are doing to manage during Covid? Emotionally and Entertainment wise?
We call family meetings a few times a month to share how we’re all doing and to see what we can do to help one another; watch Netflix; go to the beach to walk and eat dessert while social distancing from crowds.
